I need to extract information from word documents.

So I went hunting and found a lovely library for writing and reading docx files: https://github.com/mikemaccana/python-docx

But it required the PIL library, and there is no installer for available for PIL and python 2.7 (which is the default on Snow Leopard).

So I went looking and found this crystal clear recipe for building PIL on Snow Leopard.

Unlike most such recipes (in my experience), this just worked.

And then python-dox just worked.

Warning: This wooden bike is a proto- type and has not been tested to be safe and it is there for to be built and used at the risk of the user and or builder. The above bike worked well for riders under 140 lbs at slow speeds on a smooth road. Heavier riders, speed or bumpy road conditions are not recommended. Wooden members should be thicken to handle heavier loads. Some images of this proto type show screws but bolts should be used through out.

A Project of Human Powered Machines (HPM)

Mission Statement: To promote decentralized fabrication of human powered transportation and infrastructure based on Human Powered Machines designs and methods.

HPN Purpose: To create an infrastructure that will facilitate a partnership that includes apprentices, CAT, HPM, and HPN colleagues, associates, and contributors.

Tiered System of Production

Upon completion of the Cargo Bike Framebuilding Apprenticeship Program, apprentices can become HPN partners upon approval of Human Powered Machines.

Human Powered Machines has created a system of tiers for those who have completed the HPM Apprenticeship Program. The purpose of this system is to allow apprentices to incrementally develop their shops and fabrication facilities. Through this system apprentices can begin to add value and generate income without large capital expenditures; for instance, an HPN partner with basic tools and a truing stand could purchase a complete frameset from HPM. They could then build their own wheelset and build up the frameset into a completed bike. Their labor, including wheelbuilding and installing components, is the source of their income. Over time, HPN partners progress from receiving completed bikes, and proceed in stages with fewer and fewer elements from HPM until they are constructing their own complete frames.

This system exists in strong contrast to the course of development of a typical beginning framebuilder, who is faced with needing capital for tools and equipment for a startup. Instead of being forced to begin from scratch, apprentices are trained thoroughly and have support from experts in many fields. They are also able to take advantage of continuous improvement across the network; when someone discovers a better or faster way of accomplishing a task, it won’t be long before everyone is aware of it.

The benefits of this system are manifold: products need not be shipped, the customer gets local fabrication with all the associated benefits, and users of our products are assured of getting the best the Human Powered Network, with its multiple partners, can provide.

One way to make the region more bicycle-friendly is for municipalities to make sure they connect existing trails and trail segments. Over the past decade or so there has been progress, DeSarra says.The Erie Canal trail and the Genesee Valley Greenway are examples; they even connect to each other. But there's still work to be done on those trails, such as making more connections or offering better markings.

The Greenway, combined with the Genesee Riverway, provides a straight shot from RIT to downtown, says Jon Schull, an RIT professor who's involved in bicycling-related projects at the school. The Greenway and Riverway are actually the most direct way to get from RIT to downtown. And the University or Rochester is along the way.

Students could live downtown "without having to worry about cars and parking and all of that," Schull says. "So I see that as a real transportation innovation that could make a difference."

The Greenway and the Erie Canal trail are not complete or connected in certain parts, mostly in lesser-populated areas. If they were, those paths could be useful to commuters, Dollard says. They could act as a bicycle highway from outlying areas into the city.

On a broader scale, there's the potential to connect trails from Lake Ontario and the City of Rochester to Williamsport, Pennsylvania, via 230 miles of trails, including the Genesee Riverway Trail and the Genesee Valley Greenway. The only hurdle is a few short gaps and one 20-mile gap that need to be connected, Schull says.

And that doesn't even touch on the cycling opportunities that are available in the Finger Lakes region, east of the Greenway. Bike-based scenic tours and wine country tours are already popular.

Ever confused, cyclist Jon Schull leads the way

High Falls is a stunning natural landmark and attraction in downtown Rochester, but to people bicycling through the city on the Genesee Riverway Trail, there's no clear, marked way to get there. Cyclist Jon Schull says that he takes a different route each time because he doesn't know the best way to go.

"We are already one of the best bicycling destinations in the world, but no one is telling that story," says Schull, a member of the newly formed Rochester Cycling Alliance, an advocacy group. "And if you were going to tell that story, you'd want to take care of a few embarrassments, like what's the right way to ride to High Falls? And how do I get from High Falls back on the trail that will take me up to Seneca Park and Lake Ontario?"

Schull is one of several people trying to hammer home just how close the Rochester region is to becoming a world-class cycling destination.

But in one continuous pirouette, you can make a video that contains a panorama.

So I want a tool that will take a short video taken while turning in a circle and convert it into a panoramic photo.

Stitch Panorama: a GIMP Plug-in

Stich Panorama is a plug-in for the GNU Image Manipulation Program (GIMP) which takes digital images and overlays one atop the other to make a panorama. With multiple applications of Stitch Panorama, any number of images can be combined into a large panorama. Features include image blending, color balance, and distortion matching. The above image was stitched together from four separate images. Try it yourself, the images are in the example directory.

The Stich Panorama plug-in gives give you a lot of control over how the final panorama is stitched together. You select the features to correlate in the images, how the blending is to be done, and how the colors are to be matched. Extensive control over the final panorama was a major design goal. There are other, more automated, tools available (see below), but I prefer to have as much control as possible over the stitching process. The final panorama uses a rectilinear projection, well suited to panoramas that do not cover an excessive field-of-view. However, the rectilinear projection will not work well for panoramas that cover a full 360 degrees.

Stich Panorama is written in the Python language and requires that your GIMP has python support compiled in.

What a lovely afternoon for a ride on the Greenway!

If the purpose of this whole event is to raise awareness of the trail,
you've caused at least one new person to ride it. I'd ridden many times before from Genesee Valley Park to downtown, but had never ridden out to RIT before on the Lehigh Valley Trail. It makes RIT seem a whole lot closer to downtown then I'd ever thought before. It's a nice ride even with road tires!

There are a dozen flyers in page protectors along the trail now. They are mostly attached to Genesee River Trail signs and the gates at road intersections on the Lehigh Valley Trail. Some pictures are attached.

Please let me know if there's anything else that I can help you with in getting ready for Saturday. I plan to drive out to RIT on Saturday morning and ride the round trip, set up a table for R Community Bikes, and hang out at the event until it's over.

I'm writing to alert you to an event that should be of interest to bicyclists and environmentalists throughout the Greater Rochester area.

Saturday, October 24th will mark 350.org's International Day of Climate Action and the end of a week of climate action teach-ins at RIT. The culminating event in Rochester will be a mass bike ride along the proposed Rochester Greenway. The Rochester Greenway goes south from Downtown along the river, past the University of Rochester, through the Genessee Valley Park, and on down the Lehigh Valley North Trail to RIT. The draft GreenRide poster sketches the route.

Once at RIT, the Rochester Bike Summit will be held in the new Center for Student Innovation. Its goal: to discuss a number of exciting bicycle and alternative transportation initiatives, and to make connections between the bicycle community, city planners, and environmentalists. We might also consider the need for a "common cause" organization that could help these initiatives become realities. For more information, see the draft Rochester Bicycle Ecology Poster (attached), and look for details coming soon to RochesterGreenway.org. Your input and projects would be most welcome additions!

I'm looking for the most lightweight system for documenting what's going on the Innovation Center.

I'd like to be able to take a picture or video, add a voice annotation and/or text, send it to the web and see the post with the voice annotation transcribed. (Is that asking so much?)

I can't figure out how to mash that up (see below), but what I can do with my iphone easily is upload video to youtube (with narration say) and later do easy "captions" in the form of annotations and even swap in a sound track...all from within youtube on the web.

Below are the approaches I explored before deciding the above is as good as it's likely to get.

For example there's a neat $1.99 iphone app called "Say It and Mail It" that makes it easy to attach a voice recording and a photo (and a map) to a single email message.

I can email to blogger, or to reqall, but the voice recording is lost:
I can email to evernote, the voice recording is included.

Now what about transcripts?

I can call reqall and get a transcript back by email
but I can't send the voice recording to reqall
--I might be able to finesse that by playing the voice recording through skype, but I can't get reqall to accept the skype call (though this reportedly can be done).

Individuals perform success-driven migration, i.e. they move to empty locations with a higher expected payoff. The maximum migration distance in one time step was assumed to be 5. Starting with uniformly distributed strategies, one observes an agglomeration of individuals, and individuals with different strategies mix. INTRODUCTION

I was quite excited a few months ago when I stumbled across the Vuzix VR920, a lightweight set of virtual reality eye glasses with dual hi-res displays. The amount of features packed into the three ounce package is really impressive:

dual 640 x 480 VGA progressive scan LCDs with a 32 degree field (scales to 1024×768)
head tracking
built in microphone
dual speakers
USB powered
nVidia stereo driver support

Most importantly for us, it supports Second Life, as well as World of Warcraft, and a suite of games. The Second Life support is currently not native, but works well with mouselook mode, as I demonstrate in the video below. Vuzix was kind enough to loan me one to test out with Second Life and is actively seeking enterprising developers who may be interested in helping develop native Second Life support for the device. The VR920 is the first device that supports immersive three dimensional graphics, head tracking, as well as microphone and audio all in one device.

New report: 120 days of stimulus spending

Within the $787 billion stimulus bill that became law in February, Congress provided states and Metropolitan Planning Organizations (MPOs) with $26.6 billion in flexible funds for transportation projects. The first half of the funding was to be committed within 120 days, by Monday, June 29th.

Despite a multitrillion dollar backlog of roadway and bridge repairs throughout the

country, almost a third of the money — more than $6.6 billion — was committed to new

capacity roads and bridges rather than to repair and other preservation projects.

The nation is growing, and many areas need substantial improvements in connectivity. Many

places will need additional roadway capacity. However, given the enormous roadway and

bridge repair backlog, its costs in terms of vehicle repairs, its threat to human safety, and the

job‐creation advantages of roadway preservation projects, this magnitude of new

construction cannot said to be fulfilling the goals of the ARRA.

2. States generally failed to take advantage of a golden opportunity offered by the flexibility

in the STP to make progress on the huge public transportation backlog, and move

towards a more balanced transportation system.

Given the growing demand, the need for upgrading identified in the ASCE report, and the many

benefits of public transportation, the $189 million in STP funding allocated by the states so

far is grossly inadequate. Even when the dedicated, non‐STP funding for public transportation

is taken into consideration, commitments to transportation choice fall far short of the need.

The $600 million in STP funding commitments to non‐motorized transportation is better, but

also fails to meaningfully respond to the public’s need for more affordable and healthy

transportation options. This level of spending for bicycling and walking will have minimal

impact on the nation’s stock of bicycle and pedestrian routes, or on individual mobility.

3. We could get much more from our transportation spending, but the federal program

isn’t set up to ensure that we get the most from the money spent. With scarce resources,

large backlogs and increasing challenges, it’s an opportunity we can’t afford to waste.

The data make clear that with different funding choices, greater progress could have been

made combating climate change, increasing energy security, increasing mobility for elderly

and low income populations, and reducing the repair backlog. More jobs could have been

created, more quickly. However, the federal transportation program does not clearly

articulate what goals should be achieved with each tax dollar spent, nor how to compare

different spending options against those goals, nor how to ensure progress towards meeting

them. The result is wasted opportunity and money.

The Alliance for Biking & Walking will award a total of $250,000 in
2009. Advocacy Advance Grants will range from $5,000–$30,000.
Approximately $125,000 will be available for Round 1 and another
$125,000 in Round 2. Each round will include a balance of Start-up and
Innovation Grants. The Alliance’s ability to award grants is dependent
upon receipt of the support pledged for this program.

Start-up / Capacity Building Grant Funding Priorities

These grants are to help catapult emerging and developing organizations with matching challenge grants. Awards of $5,000–$30,000 will match dollar for dollar new funds raised within six months. These funds are to help leverage private and public investment and launch campaigns that are proven to grow bicycling and walking. Priority for Start-up Grants will be given to organizations serving cities and states with the greatest potential for biking and walking advocacy organizations. Funding may be used to develop staff, membership, and resources to reach target outcomes that both support an increase in biking and walking and sustain the organization. Advance funding will be considered, but the majority of funding will be paid when funds have been raised and/or pledges have been committed in writing.

Innovation Grant Funding Priorities

These grants are intended to help organizations take bold steps to
increase bicycling, walking, and safety. These grants can be used to
fund activities that will:

Yield new sources of funding for biking and walking (e.g. new revenue streams and old programs that are ripe for change)
Spur groundbreaking designs (e.g. Euro designs, reprogramming of streets space)
Create innovative marketing and encouragement programs (e.g. new media, new audiences, social marketing)
Develop cause-related marketing and mainstream partnerships (e.g. transit, seniors, health, business)
Improve, expand or extend an existing program that promises further success

The
goal is to create successful models that can spread throughout North
America. Priority for Innovation Grants will be given to established
organizations who demonstrate a clear work plan to develop and freely
share their innovative program. Grants from $5,000–$30,000 will be
awarded for winning proposals. Matching funds and over-matches are
encouraged and will be evaluated favorably.

Paris' Bike Rental System A Global Revolution for City Cycling?

In July 2007, a short-term bike rental program called Vélib debuted in Paris. Designed and created by outdoor advertising giant JCDecaux, the program includes 20,600 rental bikes at 1,451 stations throughout the city, providing an inexpensive, convenient way for people to use bikes for short trips.

The response has been amazing. Parisians and visitors alike are using the bikes in huge numbers, racking up 11 million trips by November 2007. A bike rental is free for the first 30 minutes, approximately $1.50 for the next half hour, and incrementally more expensive for longer periods. This tiered price structure makes the bikes appealing for short-term trips but discourages users from keeping them overnight, ensuring a ready supply throughout the city.

The Paris program has revolutionized bicycling in the city. As word spreads of its success—and of other programs in Lyon, Barcelona, Vienna, and Berlin—cities worldwide are taking notice. Portland, Oregon; San Francisco, California; Washington, D.C.; and Chicago, Illinois, are just a few of the U.S. cities expressing interest in creating similar programs.

The City of Rochester will use designated federal stimulus funds to extend ARTWalk in every direction and improve University Avenue, Mayor Robert J. Duffy announced late last week.

The permanent urban art trail connects arts centers and public spaces in Rochester's Neighborhood of the Arts.

Water is a trail’s worst enemy. Storms can wash out trails and sever tree limbs, blocking a trail or making it unsafe for hikers. Even normal levels of rainfall can cause erosion and have long term effects on a trail.
In 2007, The United States Forest Service published the Trail Construction and Maintenance Notebook. is a beginner’s manual for building or maintaining a sustainable trail. At a minimum, all trail construction or maintenance volunteers should review the Forest Service Notebook before participating in a trail project.

Get local guidance

Some local trail groups may provide volunteers additional training tailored for their geography or climate conditions. If there are no groups in your area, more in-depth training is available through non-governmental organizations. The Professional Trail Builders Association For a more hands-on experience, the International Mountain Bicycling Association travels the country conducting Trail-building Schools.

the rider is an electric trike designed by israili designer elisha wetherhorn. the super-light design is collapsible and boasts a small electric motor that can power the bike up to 15kph for around 4 hours. The aluminum frame of the trike keeps it light, weighing only 14 kg. the design even manages to squeeze in regenerative braking to keep its 24 volt battery powered up on a trip. the unique two-wheeled back allows the rider to carve turns, giving the trike optimal stability.

ubicycle Public Bicycle Service System

The Ubicycle service is composed of three primary elements. First, is an easy access key card that can be charged with funds for any kind of public transportation, including trains and buses. Smart chips not only identify the user of the bike, but also allows unlocking of the rack and bicycle.

The cards will employ RFID technology, adding greater convenience by speeding up checkout and authentication processes.
The modular racking station allows easy installation and efficient use of space. 14 bicycles racked on these stations occupy the same amount of space as a parking space for one car.
Solar power will help run these stations on a day-to-day basis, providing energy for the key reader and locking mechanisms.

What is this all about?

A city bike program has the potential of providing for your city a proven, workable, affordable, near-term city transforming new mobility measure that you and your colleagues should probably be looking at closely. It is our view that with proper preparation you can adapt and put it to work in your city. But there is more to it than one may at first think. This collaborative program is intended to help you gain time and focus in this process.

There are three important structural points about these systems which may not be immediately self-evident.

The Amazing Revival of the Bicycle | Project for Public Spaces (PPS)

New public bike systems debuting in Paris, Barcelona and other cities mark the dawn of personal rapid transit

Today there are more than 100 public bike systems underway, the most famous being the huge new system created in Paris last summer under the name Vélib’ (roughly free bike). There are more than 15,000 currently in service and with the full fleet up to 20,000 by the end of this year. Other large systems are in operation or underway in Barcelona, Lyon, Rome, Berlin, and in North America there are several dozen cities looking carefully at this idea, with projects about to be launched in Chicago, San Francisco, Montreal, Vancouver and Washington DC.

What is most promising about these new transportation systems is how efficiently and simply they work. Think of them as tiny transit vehicles you can pick up where you want, when you want, go to exactly where you want and leave them there. They offer the same convenience of the car but without all the problems—from parking to traffic jams to pollution to sprawl. They are truly a form personal rapid transit.

The judges thought this was hugely topical in the current recession and suggested that, rather than investment, it might focus on loans. Loans would be legally less complex than investment and there are already similar models to learn from - it’s a kind of hyper-local Zopa or Kiva. It’s also drawing on old ideas which provide an alternative to banking, such as credit unions. Community Investors Club was originally a closed submission, but it’s now up our site with all the others here.

The Social Innovation Camp was first created and run in the UK. Now it’s springing up all over the place; other people are taking the idea and running their own thing.

The Centre for Social Innovation is bringing it to New Zealand later on this year, and the Central and Eastern Europe Civil Society Forum are planning theirs for September 2009. You can find more of the details here.

We reckon that each Social Innovation Camp will be slightly different, but its DNA is always the same.

We hope Social Innovation Camp shows that if you have a little faith in people, they can do amazing things for all sorts of different reasons - whether it’s to solve a problem; to do something that’s worth doing or because it’s simply really good fun.

We believe the incredible thing about the web and new technologies is that they make all of this possible by helping people to organise things better for themselves. And Social Innovation Camp is all about making that a practical reality by helping people create the next generation of social start-ups.

But our really grand vision is that the Social Innovation Camp might play a small part in creating a big change: a shift where people don’t just complain about stuff that needs fixing or rely on government/companies/charities to do it for them. Instead, we want to give people the confidence, connections and skills they need to start up their own thing and mend something that’s broken.

So, wherever you are in the world, stop whinging, get excited and fix stuff.
