What happens when my Mac is stolen?

IP information

Transmission of network information

Like most other theft-recovery software, Undercover will transmit network information of the stolen Mac. This information includes both internal and external IP addresses and the router address, enabling our recovery center to accurately trace the Mac's physical location.

screenshot

See what happens on your stolen Mac

Undercover is the world's first theft-recovery software that will send screenshots of your stolen Mac at regular intervals. These screenshots will sooner or later reveal the thief's identity (e.g. when chatting, reading and writing emails,...) making it much easier to work with law enforcement in order to recover your Mac.

iSight support

See who's using your Mac

Undercover introduces another world first: if your Mac has a built-in or external iSight, Undercover will transmit pictures of the thief and his surroundings every 6 minutes, making it even easier to identify the current user. It's like having a private detective working for you.

I know that you might be sick of my Art of Innovation speech, but Zentation has created a very good way to view a PowerPoint-based speech that shows both the speaker and the current slide. Here is a sample to show you how it works.

Scientists Induce Out-of-Body Sensation - New York Times

Scientists Induce Out-of-Body Sensation - New York Times

The out-of-body experiments were conducted by two research groups using slightly different methods intended to expand the so-called rubber hand illusion.

In that illusion, people hide one hand in their lap and look at a rubber hand set on a table in front of them. As a researcher strokes the real hand and the rubber hand simultaneously with a stick, people have the vivid sense that the rubber hand is their own.

When the rubber hand is whacked with a hammer, people wince and sometimes cry out.

The new experiments were designed to create a whole body illusion with similar manipulations.

In Switzerland, Dr. Olaf Blanke, a neuroscientist at the École Polytechnique Fédérale in Lausanne, Switzerland, asked people to don virtual reality goggles while standing in an empty room. A camera projected an image of each person taken from the back and displayed 6 feet away. The subjects thus saw an illusory image of themselves standing in the distance.

Then Dr. Blanke stroked each person’s back for one minute with a stick while simultaneously projecting the image of the stick onto the illusory image of the person’s body.

When the strokes were synchronous, people reported the sensation of being momentarily within the illusory body. When the strokes were not synchronous, the illusion did not occur....

Sync your iPhone with Microsoft Entourage

I must admit I'm a bit surprised that this slipped past me, so I hope I'm not the only one that didn't realize Entourage can sync with the iPhone via its oft-forgotten ability to play well with Mac OS X's Sync Services. According to this Apple support doc, switching on the preference you see above in Entourage 11.3.5 or later will break down the barriers between Entourage, Address Book and iCal, allowing iTunes to unite your iPhone and Entourage in beautiful synching harmony

Using OggSync To Link the Microsoft World and Google Calendars

Filed under: OggSync Overview — OggSync @ 10:37 am

One common configuration question, which also happens to be the initial design goal of OggSync, is a user with both professional and personal calendars, using Outlook+Exchange at work, Outlook at Home and perhaps a Windows Mobile Phone. This is OggSync’s design target, so this article is an outline for using OggSync in this situation.

iBrickr v0.2 released - iPhone modding for Windows made easy

Posted by natetrue 2 days ago

Hey everyone - I just released the first version of iBrickr, a Windows app that makes iPhone modding easy. Just download it, run it, and plug in your iPhone and it will guide you through the steps, doing most of the work for you.

iPhones modified this way do not need to be "unjailbroken" to work with iTunes - your iPhone will always appear the same to iTunes as it ever did.

Right now ringtone management is the star feature, with application management via PXL being less useful because PXL packages are at the moment hard to come by.

It has an in-built error reporting architecture (you get to review everything that gets sent my way though), so if something goes wrong I can help you out with it and get back to you via e-mail.

So check it out, and let me know what you think.

HOWTO: Install SSH on your iPhone *DEPRECATED, use iBrickr instead*

Posted by natetrue 2 weeks ago

These instructions are deprecated - it's much easier to download iBrickr and install the dropbear and binkit packages using the Applications interface.

Instructions left for nostalgia sake, though:

These instructions work with the latest 1.0.1 iPhone update.

Right now these instructions work for Windows. A Mac OSX version must be made by someone else, but the translation is fairly easy. The sshify-windows.bat must be replaced with a file that contains equivalent Mac OSX commands.

These instructions MUST be run on a phone that has already had Jailbreak 1.1 run on it. For instructions on that see the custom ringtone tutorial.

    This tutorial is dead easy.

Step 1 - Download Nate True's iPhone SSH kit.

Step 2 - Extract that to a folder somewhere.

Step 3 - Run sshify-windows.bat and follow the instructions carefully.

Okay, Step 3 is more steps but they are laid out plainly.

Step 4 - Connect with SSH! You should be able to use an SCP client like WinSCP to put more files from the latest compiled binkit.

    iPhone: the first 48 hours

    It's a very good thing.

The one problem I've had is connecting to my Frontiernet wireless. I think the problem is with the speedstream router which has been giving my mac trouble too.

Frontier tech support apparently solved my mac problem by persuading me to turn on wpa secrity. I apparently solved my iphone problem by connecting a belkin54g router to my network. No more dropped connections.

Meanwhile, I've also confirmed that you can activate a (second) iPhone using iActivator. This means the applications run, etc, albeit with no phone functioning. But while the iphone finds my wireless network(s), it fails to "find servers" (DNS failure it would seem). Yet the wifi configuration matches that on my working iPhone. To be continued....

Also, iFuntastic lets you browse the iPhone file hierarchy and modify some appearances (on my new intel mac. Am I with it, or what?)

IActivator easy iPhone activation - ModMyiPhone - Wiki

IActivator easy iPhone activation - ModMyiPhone - Wiki

iActivator is a GUI for jailbreak, iASign, and iphoneinterface which allows you to easily activate your iPhone from a GUI. No Terminal required! This is NOT an unlocking tool, for those of you looking for that. It allows for "activating" the phone without service so you can use it as an internet device/PDA without having service and making calls, etc.

    • The iPhone Firmware (use this version if you haven’t applied the 1.0.1 firmware update, and this version if you have). It should automatically expand into a folder named something like “iPhone1,1_1″ If it doesn’t, change the file extension to “.zip”, then expand it.

Yamaha Introduces a Fish Eye 360 Degree Webcam

Yamaha Introduces a Fish Eye 360 Degree Webcam

    USB Webcams & Digital Cameras

Yamaha is now selling a new USB webcam called the PJP-CAM1 that allows 360 degree recording and video capture. This cam could be great for virtual meetings where you want to see the faces of the people you are talking to. The camera is priced at 102,900 Yen or about $845 here in the U.S.A., making this one of the most expensive web cams ever. To get multiple people around the cam into the virtual meeting, the lens is a fish eye design, which means you will have to live with some weird distortion of the video. You can however, turn the fish eye video into normal images of participants if you desire. Availability is set for late July in Japan with no word on if the cam will make it to the States.

    dailywireless.org Panoramic Video

Panoramic video is like a QTVR window into a scene. With movement all around. The Omnidirectional Vision Page has a terrific overview of 360 degree video techniques.
The problem with panoramic video, like panoramic stills, is bandwidth. A 360 degree shot has to be at least 6 screens wide requiring a similar increase in bandwidth. Standard video cameras don’t have the resolution.
HDTV might. If you shot HD video, up into a panoramic mirror, perhaps a single camera would do the trick. With an effective height of 120 pixels and an effective length of 800-1200 pixels, perhaps single camera video panoramas could be practical.
Panasonic’s new $399 FZ7 still camera can shoot 848 x 480 (16:9) video at 30 frames/second. I wonder what would happen if you pointed it up into a 360 degree mirror. With the right deconvolving software, perhaps you’d end up with 360 degree concert videos. Or maybe not.
How about that Panasonic Lumix DMC-LX1, HDTV still camera. The 8-Megapixel, widescreen shooter has Optical Image Stabilization and can record HD video ($700). The $550 Canon S80 point and shoot can record movies in XGA resolution (1024 x 768 pixels) at 15 frames per second.
Point it up into a Kaidan 360 One VR lens (right, $749.95) consisting of a lightweight and rugged optical system and EyeSee360 PhotoWarp software. The 360 One VR optic provides a complete 360° horizontal panorama with a 100° vertical field-of-view (50° above and 50° below the horizon).
Sony’s HDR-HC1 HDV Camcorder ($1999) is the first High Definition (HDV) camcorder under $2,000. The HDR-HC1 features a single 4:3 aspect ratio CMOS chip and achieves a resolution nearly triple most MiniDV camcorders, recording some 656.1 lines of horizontal resolution and 480 lines of vertical resolution. The Sony HDR-HC3, available in a couple of months, will have 1080i. Screw on a fisheye lens and you’re good to go.
Make a Panoramic EventCam with six, $500 Canon S80s with wide angle lenses. Breeze Systems’s RemoteCapture lets you control the cameras from a remote PC.Or automatically FTP to a Zoom Server like Social Canvas so multiple users can (virtually) zoom in on a small section of an 8 Meg image. Here a 360 degree panorama from the top of Mt Everest and a one Gig Panoscan.
